I was with my dad in the old Shiloh Church. We were the only ones inside. There was a woman outside but she never entered. So anyway, I snapped some pictures of the cool recreated church. I even posed by the alter. Well, 2 years later, I discovered a shadow of a man wearing a top hat. He was over my shoulder in the alter picture and a picture of the fireplace (below). It was noon so the sun wasn't shining in the church. Who is this man? Please tell me who this man is!
The Seay farm cotton field, where the first shots were fired, belonged to my ancestors. They were dedicated Methodists, and certainly attended this church.
What an amazing experience to see the actual place where so much history has taken place!
The house of worship that ironically gave its name - "a place of peace" - to a major Civil War battle, the building itself was rebuilt with contemporary rough-hewn logs. Shiloh, or Pittsburg Landing, as the Confederates called it, was a confusing, see-saw, two-day engagement that cost almost 23,000 casualties. The church is at its core.
I hiked here for Boy Scouts in 2015. The museums are filled with artifacts and the battlegrounds are well maintained. In fact, my great-great-great-uncle was a solider at this battle!
Ghost Story:
The history that sits on this hallowed ground is full of interesting facts, tidbits. One can feel the gravity of the situation by stopping here on the their tour of the NPS battlefield.
